Interview with Spaghetti Castle
1) Who are you?
We are Spaghetti Castle. Creative duo and partners in life.2) Can you describe your surroundings?
An apartment bedroom overlooking a retention pond full of sliders and softshells; in Gainesville, Florida (USA). From our window, we watch them swim and we want to believe.
3) Where would you like to go?
We'd like to live as expatriates in Mexico City, like Nancarrow.
4) What would you say are the main features of your creative process(s)?
Catharsis, obfuscation, onanism, improvisation, medicine.
5) What do you really want your audience to understand about you/your art?
We'd like them to understand that this project is no more, nor any less, than an attempt at abreaction and exorcism...art therapy.
6) Does audience matter?
So much of our output is collaborative in some way; if not always, strictly speaking, a duet. There always seems to be an audience of at least one, and they're always vital to the moment.
7) Why Resist?
Because it's personal. Because the pain is too great and to lash out in defense is all but instinctual...unless you're a fucking Cylon/social Darwinist.
8) Why do you do it?
To connect, to heal, to pass the time. To keep the wolf at the door.
9) What drives you?
The need to mitigate suffering, combined with a rabbit's wont.
10) What do you do in your daily life?
Currently, quarantine. Previously, over a decade in recycling and education (respectively).
11) Do you have any strategies for adapting to the challenges of existing in your unnatural environment? If so, what are they?
Take only what you need. Do as little harm as practically possible. Help if you can.
12) What is your favorite animal?
Any honest animal. Any one that does not augur well for man and man's crimes against him.
*(The views expressed above have since been rendered obsolete by modern, technological advancements and we can now confidently attest that the Tyrell Corporation manufactures a perfectly reliable animal, which isn't programmed to prognosticate nor bode ill at any time. Today's man sleeps soundly, his karmic record expunged by his own whimsical hand).
13) What would your superpower be?
The ability to manifest and edit our own dreams, but we'd settle for a gently-used holodeck.
14) What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen?
We witnessed Camden, New Jersey set ablaze on Mischief Night 1991. More than one hundred arsons in a single night, multiple shootings, dozens and dozens of arrests. That wasn't exactly an 'ordinary' night.
15) Please tell us something about one EFSPACM project that you took part in, and how you worked on your piece.
The JAVELIN project, as well as being our first time participating, felt like kismet. We thought to ourselves "Gee, aren't the Cartwright boys an awful lot like the children of Zeus? All born of different mothers, all anachronisms, all adults living under the rule and roof of their fathers. And amongst the bunch, on both sides, a few fine javelin throwers." We used mostly tape loops and delay for our submission.
