Interview with Linn Friberg

1) Who are you?

Linn Friberg, a TCK (third culture kid) based in Norrköping, Sweden. I am the curator/producer of two different compilation series on Kalamine Records (France) - INTENT and PARADIGM. Creating music since 2005 under different aliases, and contributing regularly to the projects run by Slavek Kwi (Artificial Memory Trace). I used to be many things through life, and the only consistent things about me were and are reinventing the self, undergoing deep personal transformation, developing further, and broadening the horizons. I speak Swedish, English, Icelandic, and Russian with various degrees of proficiency. Understanding also basic Norwegian (bokmål), and planning to study Greek and Chinese later on.

2) Can you describe your surroundings?

A tiny studio apartment in central Norrköping nearby the river. The apartment contains my main habitat, music production studio, and hydroponic garden. I grow my own vegetables, fruits, and microgreens using the Kratky method and inside a DWC (Deep Water Culture) setup as well.

3) Where would you like to go?

To be honest, almost anywhere; really longing for travels again when the pandemic will be finally over.

4) What would you say are the main features of your creative process(es)?

My collaborations are almost exclusively sample-based, there has been only one instance so far when a collaborator sent me MIDI files to work on. My own music is now mostly synth-based, and I look forward to producing music generatively; I was one of the beta testers for the GenerIter SDK by Thomas Jackson Park, and hoping to produce something new in this way during the summer.

5) What do you really want your audience to understand about you/your art?

My music is either something murky and experimental, or very bright and synthetic. The former is mostly therapy, the latter is mostly about programming myself for a positive outcome.

6) Does the audience matter?

Not really, but it's nice when the work is appreciated. I make a lot of effort to present everything "properly" through write-ups, cover artwork, mastering, et cetera.

7) Why Resist?

I would say, the question of "resist or not" depends on the situation.

8) Why do you do it?

Self-programming, data-driven strategies, and networking. Fortunately, I made some friends through creative activities.

9) What drives you?

There is still so much to do and so much to experience on the brighter side of the life spectrum.

10) What do you do in your daily life?

Studying towards a BSc in Statistics and Data Analysis at Linköping University and practicing my skills in R. I also used to be active in the local student union as the agent for education affairs, assisting students and being at the forefront for the student representation towards the university institutions, participating in the quality assessment dialogue with the faculty, as well as in the strategy workshop which set the course for Linköping University's vision towards 2030.

11) Do you have any strategies for adapting to the challenges of existing in your unnatural environment? If so, what are they?

Everyone has their own story and all the circumstances are unique, so the strategies vary from situation to situation.

12) What is your favorite animal?

A rat. Intelligent, social, curious, fast learner, understanding complex concepts.

13) What would your superpower be?

I would go with teleportation, being able to visit each and every interesting corner on Earth and beyond.

14) What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen?

I was in the middle of the city when the famous truck attack in Stockholm happened. Chaos engulfed the city, sirens, smoke, fire... and no one knew where the terrorist was. I made it out of the city on foot due to transport collapse.

15) Please tell us something about one EFSPACM project that you took part in, and how you worked on your piece.

"Field Recordings" wasn't the first field recordings album I contributed to, but it turned out great. Back then I just installed a water feature home, so it was quite obvious to me, what should I record for the album.
